God’s Message For Our Mess

1 John 1:5–10 (ESV): 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us

Sin is anything Jesus would not do

The secret to victory over sin is simple – stay in the Light!

YOU DON’T HAVE A ISSUE OF SIN, YOU HAVE AN ISSUE WITH BELIEF

Vs 8 “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

Every sin begins with a lie
Even the first sin began with a lie

Genesis 3:4–6 (ESV): But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

Satan’s strategy

To question God’s word/truth
To question God’s intentions

At the root of all sin is a lie that says you’re missing something and this will solve it

EVERY LIE HAS A FATHER

John 8:44 (ESV): You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Satan’s dirty secret is that he believes his own lies
When you believe “his truth” you become slave to “his lie”

GOD’S TRUTH DESTROYS SATAN’S LIES

Vs 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all…7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Matt 4

“And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God’”” (Matthew4:3-4 ESV).

The Lie: “You have to prove yourself.” “What you do determines who you are.”

The Truth: “that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD” (Deuteronomy 8:3, ESV).

I am who He says I am!

“and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test’”” (Matthew4:6-7, ESV).

The Lie: “If God is good, He wouldn’t harm you.”

The Truth: “You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah” (Deuteronomy 6:16, ESV).

God is light and in him there is NO DARKNESS

“And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”” (Matthew 4:9-10, ESV).

The Lie: “God can’t bless you. God can’t give you the nations as an inheritance. I am the god of this world. Recognize me, worship me and I will give you what God can not.”

The Truth: “It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear” (Deuteronomy 6:12–13, ESV).

The Lie says, “I’m not hurting anyone”

The lie says, “This is not big deal, a little sin will not hurt.”

The lie says, “I can’t help myself, I was born this way.”

The truth says _____________________

Remember: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (vs 9)

If I remain in the LIGHT of TRUTH, I live above the DARKNESS of SIN
