Miracles For Today… Why? Why Not?!
Acts 2: 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
43. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. (NIV)Vs. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. (KJV)
Attitudes do not change how God feels about us, but they can change how we feel about God..
And how we feel about God will enhance or impede our ability to trust Him and receive from Him!
Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.
**There is something inside all of us that we like to be amazed.
This is what the religious leaders asked Jesus for too. (Herod the Pharisee)
Luke 23: 8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him.
Not to do a trick, but to show me a sign…do a miracle (NIV & KJV)
But Jesus refused to “Honor their selfish request”.
Luke 23: 9 So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer.
Jesus does not do miracles as a performance, but rather he does them for as purpose.
Fundamental Truth – Divine Healing
Divine Healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers.
Isaiah 53:4,5 – Matthew 8:16,17 – James 5:14-16
So why don’t we see more signs and wonders today?
- Some people, some denominations, believe that the time of miracles passed away with the Apostles. (This is called Cessation)
Cessation Theory goes on to say – That the miraculous gifts were given to authenticate the message being preached by the Apostles.
In part that is true…That the miraculous gifts were given to authenticate the message being preached by the Apostles…
2 Cor. 12: 12 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.
(No doubt God used signs and wonders to help prove their message)
But… the signs by themselves are not enough!
2 Thes. 2: 9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10 and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
Signs and wonders are not enough – The devil can counterfeit them.
So, the miracles that were given – were given to the apostles were not the sole verifying agent…They served an important purpose… but they were not simply done to convince people.
1 Cor. 1: 22 Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
In other words, God will give faith to those who hear the preaching of the Gospel. People will not believe simply because they see a miracle. - We have a limited view. We see things form a different perspective than God.
God works not to perform and act — but to fulfill a purpose.
We should not be surprised that we don’t understand what He is doing sometimes. - Awe filled hearts!
43. Everyone was filled with awe
Let’s look back at our text …
Acts 2: 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day 42They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer
a. They were baptized (relationship/repentance)
b. They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching (equip groups, discipleship)
c. To fellowship (Connect Groups, church attendance, camps, etc.)
d. To breaking of bread. (Communion)
e. To Prayer
THEN everyone was filled with AWE!
Could it be that the miracles were done as a result of the atmosphere of Faith that was in the hearts of the Awe filled disciples?
Could it be that the reason we don’t see the signs is not a problem with God, but with us?
Why is it that God does not seem to do this or that…heals some but not others?
Matthew 13: 58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
Matthew 13:54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they
were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked.
55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense at him.
Look at this – Instead of AWE they took OFFENSE
Let me add a Pt. f. to that list!!!
f. Unity (they were ALL filled with awe)
Day of Pentecost – 120 in the upper room all in one accord
1 Cor. 15: 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.
